I'm a HUGE fan of Frank Miller's work, and this movie is based on it - an absolute must see for 2007.

The movie is based on the Battle of Thermophylae, where an alliance of approximately 5000 Greeks ( exactly 300 Spartans and other groups of small Greek cities) stood in defiance of an invading army of 2 and a half million Persians.
